Lacon Childe has four fully networked computer suites. Pupils in Key Stage 3 have a one-hour ICT lesson each week. These lessons broadly follow Key Stage 3 ICT Strategy units of work which have been adapted to suit the needs of our pupils. Key Stage 3 pupils' work also includes elements of creative ICT use including digital photography, games design, animation and rollercoaster design.
In Year 9 pupils begin studying for the Level 2 Functional Skills in ICT, following the EDEXCEL specification. This enables some pupils to achieve a half-GCSE equivalent in Year 9. The Functional Skills work continues into Key Stage 4 where pupils have one lesson per fortnight of ICT. This enables pupils to sit the Functional Skills exam when they are ready to do so.
In addition, pupils have access to computers in lessons across the curriculum, and are able to make use of wireless networked laptops to support their learning in other subjects. Many departments also have dedicated PCs or iMac computers with specialist software to enhance the pupils’ experience and most classrooms are equipped with Digital Projectors and Interactive Whiteboards.
In Key Stage 4, pupils are able to opt for Creative iMedia which follows the OCR specification (see www.ocr.org.uk for details). They study units chosen from a range including animation, digital graphics, games engines, games design, digital sound and digital video. They are able to gain either a single GCSE or 2-GCSE equivalent by the end of Year 11.
The school offers pupils access to online learning, using the Internet and VLE (www.shropshirelg.net). Pupils are encouraged to make full use of the ICT resources available to them in order to learn how best to apply ICT methods. ICT lessons cover aspects of Internet use and e-safety and all pupils are expected to follow our rules governing ICT use both within and beyond school.
